Seven Personal Characteristics Of A Good Leader

How often have you heard the comment, "He or she is a born leader?" There are certain characteristics found in some people that seem to naturally put them in a position where they're looked up to as a leader.

Whether in fact a person is born a leader or develops skills and abilities to become a leader is open for debate. There are some clear characteristics that are found in good leaders. These qualities can be developed or may be naturally part of their personality. Let us explore them further.

SEVEN PERSONAL QUALITIES FOUND IN A GOOD LEADER

Seven Personal Characteristics Of A Good Leader

1. A good leader has an exemplary character. It is of utmost importance that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. A leader needs to be trusted and be known to live their life with honestly and integrity. A good leader "walks the talk" and in doing so earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the good character and trustworthiness of the person who leads.

2. A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader. People will respond more openly to a person of passion and dedication. Leaders need to be able to be a source of inspiration, and be a motivator towards the required action or cause. Although the responsibilities and roles of a leader may be different, the leader needs to be seen to be part of the team working towards the goal. This kind of leader will not be afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.

3. A good leader is confident. In order to lead and set direction a leader needs to appear confident as a person and in the leadership role. Such a person inspires confidence in others and draws out the trust and best efforts of the team to complete the task well. A leader who conveys confidence towards the proposed objective inspires the best effort from team members.

4. A leader also needs to function in an orderly and purposeful manner in situations of uncertainty. People look to the leader during times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity and find reassurance and security when the leader portrays confidence and a positive demeanor.

5. Good leaders are tolerant of ambiguity and remain calm, composed and steadfast to the main purpose. Storms, emotions, and crises come and go and a good leader takes these as part of the journey and keeps a cool head.

6. A good leader, as well as keeping the main goal in focus, is able to think analytically. Not only does a good leader view a situation as a whole, but is able to break it down into sub parts for closer inspection. While keeping the goal in view, a good leader can break it down into manageable steps and make progress towards it.

7. A good leader is committed to excellence. Second best does not lead to success. The good leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar in order to achieve excellence in all areas.

These seven personal characteristics are foundational to good leadership. Some characteristics may be more naturally present in the personality of a leader. However, each of these characteristics can also be developed and strengthened. A good leader whether they naturally possess these qualities or not, will be diligent to consistently develop and strengthen them in their leadership role.

Team Work - Advantages and Disadvantages

A a team work has assigned almost only advantages. We can see them and name them. Meanwhile, work in a team also has small disadvantages, usually hard to see them in our everyday work. Why it's worth to work in a team and why sometimes not?

When we are talking about team work we mean that a team leader formulates tasks and team realizes it together but using the strengths of individual members. This form allows you to avoid job losses, as the activities are subject to internal audit and evaluation at each stage, and organizational activities are rationalized up.

Also when a group of intelligent people is talking about one common subject and looking for best solution they usually find the answer to their questions. Why? Because we are all different and while speaking one mind is stimulating another one and that's how the best ideas and solution usually comes up during brainstorming.

Team Work - Advantages and Disadvantages

And as we speaking of brainstorm and conversation it is very important to know how to speak with the colleagues and communicate every doubts and needs about work. Also listen actively, share suggestions and don't hide bad feelings. Letting bad feelings brew can sometimes isolate one person from the group. And that in a longer term can make this person feel not loyal to all the group. And loyalty is what in team work is most important - it makes the team feel secure with each other.

When working in a team there are no losers and no winners. That, despite of obvious advantage (no one loses anything), can be a big disadvantage - no one takes a blame and no one can feel really good of gained success. If no one is responsible for each task sometimes no one knows who is doing what and the job might not be done at all.

If we have situation that the group of people consists mostly of leaders their team work might just not simply...work. What's worse, a few people in the group who are not the leader types can be pushed aside by they colleagues and have a problem to do their jobs. Leaders would be concentrated on achieving the goal and won't care about helping other team members and socialazing with them and won't become a good team.

It is worth to work in a team having in mind those few disadvantages. Most of them can came up when the team is not very well and people don't like each other. Also sometimes when people don't know how to work in a team. That's why it is worth to try a team development course and practise social skills.

Hiring the 'right number' of people to form a web team can be an extremely tricky job. Many organizations don't understand the amount of work required to keep their sites operating smoothly. The work of a web team doesn't end with the website going live; in fact the challenging part of website maintenance starts at this point. Most managers forget that websites also require a substantial maintenance staff. This leads to understaffing of the web development team.

Understaffing can be fatal and can lead to lost business, reduced productivity, increased workplace risk which are far greater than the cost of hiring.

Accordingly, one can calculate the manpower needed for the sites maintenance.

Managers when hiring for a web development team only concentrate on the complexity of a website and technologies and forget that a website requires maintenance and hence a substantial maintenance staff as well. I assume if you're reading this article that you're familiar with the free website service known as Weebly. The people at Weebly say that their software is the easiest way to create and publish a website on-line, and I agree, but I have issues.

There are thousands of people just like me who have experience building websites with both Dreamweaver and GoLive. Most of us earn a very good living with these tools and wouldn't think of using anything else. Then along comes Weebly. What kind of a name is Weebly anyway?

Recently I decided to build a little website with this toy of a program know as Weebly. And after doing so, I want to give you my top 5 reasons why you do not want to build your own Weebly website.

5 Reasons Why You Do Not Want A Free Weebly Website

Ease of Use

Weebly is so simple to use that a monkey can do it.* And that's the problem. I've spent years developing my web design skills so that I can charge 0 an hour to create websites for people just like you. If you decide to build your own website with Weebly, the days of me building websites for 0 an hour are over. Who in their right mind would pay me to build a beautiful, functional web site when they can do it themselves without a technician? Please, I have a family to support.

Cost

Weebly is completely free. And when I say free, I mean free. You don't have to purchase software. You don't have to purchase server space from a hosting company. You don't even have to pay a technician to make change for you.

Weebly will not only make it impossible for me to earn money building websites, but it will take away my ability to charge you to host and service your site after I build it. How can I support myself when Weebly is taking away my ability to do so. It isn't right.

I don't think it's right that you as a customer should expect me to get back to you immediately every time you have a simple question about your site. It sets up the wrong impression. If I jumped every time you contacted me with a problem, you would begin to take me for granted. Besides, I have a life.

Yes, Weebly can do everything you want on your site, but that's not the point. You can add photos, text, slide shows, video, audio, credit cards, advertising, contact forms, flash files, maps, calendars, custom headers, unlimited pages and blogs. You can choose from over 20 beautiful designs and have your own domain name too, but again, that's not the point. The point is, you want to be able to tell people that your website is better because it was built with Dreamweaver and it was expensive. When I build a website for you, you'll be proud of it.

Marketing

Web designers like myself don't just design web sites for people like you, we help you market your sites too. This is one of the main ways we earn money from you after your site is built. It's also one of the most profitable things we do in our business.

Weebly is trying to lure you away from that part of our business by telling you that you can do this yourself without our help. They've even creating links to popular social networking sites to help you get started. Worse yet, sites like TakeOnTheNet offer a Weebly website marketing course loaded with tips on SEO, SEM, PPC, linking strategies and social networking to help you market your site for free. They're giving away our secrets and taking money out of our pocket. It's just not fair.

Please, don't go to Weebly to build your own website. While you're at it, don't go to TakeOnTheNet to learn how to use this software either. It's not fair to our brotherhood of web developers if you're capable of building a website in two hours without going though an apprentice program first. And don't tell your friends about this software either. Just say, "No!"

How to Articulate Your Career Achievements in 7 Steps

It's amazing how many people can't describe their achievements in order to maximize its impact. Whether its in a resume or in a job interview, your ability to describe your achievements is a critical factor for success.

So many people underplay their achievements! Question is, do YOU?

Are you submitting your resume for that job you want, or even need? Or perhaps you're preparing for an interview?

How to Articulate Your Career Achievements in 7 Steps

When you finally get the opportunity to talk about what you have achieved, it's an opportunity you won't want to waste. I've pulled together 7 keys to guide you on describing your achievements for maximum impact.

1. Clarify Your Involvement in the Achievement: Use powerful words that describe your contribution. For example, 'created', 'reorganized' or 'established'. Passive statements like 'did', 'performed' or 'was involved in' don't indicate your level of involvement - they're worthless, so don't use them.

2. Describe a Start, Middle and End: mention the starting conditions, such as 'poor performance', 'high costs', 'unpalatable risk', and follow with a statement on what you made happen (the project, change initiative, etc), and cap it off with the result - was the desired outcome achieved?

3. Quantify the Achievement: use numbers and hard measures where you can. For example, say 'saved ,000' rather than 'saved operating costs'. The more specific you are, the greater the value of your statement of achievement. In almost all cases, a percentage value has a higher-impact than an absolute number. In some cases, what might look like a minor achievement, when quantified, it could be a major achievement as perceived by others.

4. Don't Forget Over-Achievement!: If you set out to save ,000, but instead saved ,000, then make sure this is known. So many people forget to do this.

5. Indicate Your Personal Award: Some achievements warrant special reward, so mention them. If you were promoted, or awarded a bonus, then add it into your statement of achievement.

6. Include details of challenging circumstances: If the achievement was tough due to business events or conditions, then make sure you say what they were. It's important to describe any challenges you faced. For example, if there were many layoffs in your organization whilst you were tasked with improving team morale, then make these conditions clear.

7. State the Effect of the Achievement, 360-degree style: Describe the achievement not just from your own perspective; also describe what it meant for your colleagues, subordinates, management and customers (where appropriate.) Don't forget to quantify the effect for each of these groups of people too.

English Language Error Correction - A Key Language Skills Development Tool

A Lot of English Language Mistakes

English as a foreign language learners make a lot of mistakes in class, don't they? Speaking, writing, grammar and spelling errors are practically way of life with teachers and learners alike. It's a "healthy" problem though because with errors come corrections. And with correction comes learning. (J. D. Brown, 1988) The more errors learners make the more correction is done. The more correction is done, the more leaning that takes place. We most often learn much more from our mistakes than our successes. True or False?

Why Use Error Correction?

English Language Error Correction - A Key Language Skills Development Tool

When learners are producing language I class, whether speaking or writing, they usually want to know when they make any serious mistakes in their production. Do your learners ever ask, "Teacher, is that okay?" Certainly, they most probably do. In that case then, some form or forms of error correction techniques should prove to be useful. While it's not typically recommended to correct learner errors while they are speaking, some speech or pronunciation correction should be done immediately after their discourse. If many of the learners produce similar speech or pronunciation mistakes on a consistent basis, a lesson on that particular aspect may well be called for. English or other foreign language learners might also self or peer correct written work and reading in class. (M. Spratt, 2003)

Peer Correction vs. Self-Correction

There are essentially three basic forms of error correction:

o Self-correction

o Peer correction

o Teacher correction

Of these the most effective in English or foreign language skills acquisition is self-correction. When learners realize and correct their own mistakes, they are more effectively internalizing the language. The next most desirable and effective form is peer correction. When learners are able to recognize and correct their mistakes collectively, they actually help each other to develop English language skills with less interference of their respective Affective Filters. (Krashen-Terrell, 1983) Finally, there is correction of errors by the teacher. An effective means, but one that should be last and the least frequently used form of English or other foreign language correction. In cases where the EFL teacher may not be a native or near-native speaker, has grammar or pronunciation problems, heavy accent or speech traits or may otherwise desire to do so, recorded audio or video materials could be used to provide corrective modeling. (B. Kashru, 1983)

Identify the Errors and Correct

Just for fun, let's try a few interesting examples. Can you identify and correct the tag question, modal and other errors in the following sentences? Also, the corrected sentences should be true.

Today is Wednesday, aren't they?

It's raining today, isn't we?

She doesn't have a book, do he?

He like coffee, do you?

Students should be allowed to fail exams.

Teachers must to study everyday.

Students can fail all their exams and pass the course, does he?

You don't must to pay the university registration fee, can't you?

Yesterday was Monday, isn't they?

Starting a Social Networking Website From Scratch

You've seen MySpace, you've heard of Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and all the other ones. What do these websites share? They are very popular social networks. Would you like to give it a shot also? In that case, this article will point you in the correct direction.

Starting a niche social networking site with financial ambitions

Before starting the site, you'll have to think about how you will seduce members to join you. If you know people inside the community already, then that is a very good head start. You can speak to them and try to get them on board. You'll need to hit existing forums, maybe place a Google ad, or write articles (like the one you are reading now), etc.

You want to create the next huge thing like Facebook, MySpace...

Ok, knowing that you have most likely typed something like "how to start a social networking site", I am going to assume that you are not a developer. This implies that you will not be able to shake a social network out of your sleeve in the next couple of days.

All is not lost however. First of all, get help. Find a group of people who like the idea, and put your minds together. If you can get financing from somewhere, go for it. That's what you'll need to start developing a site that does exactly what you want it to do, with security, powerful servers and everything!

If you've got a great idea - try applying the same method as for niche networks - but think about getting financing as soon as possible. One you hit a hundred thousand users, your network will grow very quickly and you will pay huge amounts of money for the servers to host all of this!

If you are dreaming about the next big thing, experiment a bit beforehand - create some groups on Facebook and see what it takes to get people to join for example

Dramatic Play Idea to Explore Emotional and Social Development in Preschool Children

If you are an Early Childhood Educator and you work in a Child Care Centre then I am sure you are already planning for the Dramatic Play/Dress-up area in your weekly programming.

If you are a private home child care provider or a parent, this type of play is very important to all areas of child development but especially social and emotional.

Here is a 5-day Dramatic Play idea for all E.C.E.'s and Home Child Care Providers.

Dramatic Play Idea to Explore Emotional and Social Development in Preschool Children

When you program for this area and make it available to the children, you are giving them an opportunity to express themselves emotionally through their real life experiences at home and real life experiences through friends and other family.

Socially, it gives the children a chance to interact with their peers in a different type of social setting. They will be able to enhance on co-operation skills, sharing skills, taking turns, waiting, and sharing their feelings with their friends.

These are just to name a few. There are so many Dramatic Play ideas out there you can use, and many I have used myself. The one I tend to like the most is having a "house centre."

The house centre usually consists of a kids kitchen centre, kids table with a couple of chairs, and the rest is ready for you to add in.

What are the best things to add into a "house centre." Well as nice as it is that they manufacture just about everything as a kids toy, I prefer adding as many "real-to-life" objects as I can.

For example, instead of putting a kids telephone with googly eyes that makes silly noises, I would put in a real telephone that you would find in a real home. I have found many things free just by asking around. I ask friends and family that if they are ever throwing out anything please let me know so I can see if I can use it in my child care class.

I have found through over 10 years of programming that when you use real-to-life objects as opposed to "silly" kids toys in this area in particular, you get more role-playing from the children.

Please don't think I am against kids toys all together; my toy shelves are filled with kids toys, I am just focusing on the Dramatic Play area only at this point.

The way to keep this area interesting for a full week and have the children wanting to play in it everyday is simple. All you have to do is add in a few things daily instead of adding everything in all at once. Adding everything in your Dramatic Play centre will overwhelm the children, and you will end up with a huge mess and children just going bonkers with all the new things to play with.

When you add a few things everyday it gives the children a chance to explore and play with these items and get used to them. When you add more the next days, the children will actually use the new items with the ones they are now familiar with. You then end up with real-to-life play in a home setting.

What should you add in?

Here is an example below:

Day 1 - Add in simple objects they are used to. SOME Play food*, pots, pans, play cutlery, telephone, adult shoes (men's/women's).

*Play food is great to use because so many companies make play food look so real. One thing I like to do with food boxes like cereal and crackers is, when I am done using them at home, I take the paper liner out of the box and bring it in for the Dramatic Play area. The kids love it because they see the same things at home.

Day 2 - Add in a little more play food, a small broom and dust pan, a few hats.

Day 3 - Add in some shirts, ties, bracelets, necklaces, skirts, and a mirror or little hand-held mirrors.

Day 4 - Add in some magazines, pretend reading glasses, ice-cube trays.

Day 5 - Add in a clock, a few play watches, empty lotion bottles, empty and rinsed small juice/milk jugs/cartons.

The children are going to love this home-style set up.

You don't need to get rid of this Dramatic Play area after Day 5. If the children are having a great time, leave it set up for as long as they are interested in it.

Observe the children while they are playing and you will see a whole other side to their play that you may not have noticed before. Their play will be more real-to-life and you will see them playing through their real life experiences.

14 Steps to Take Before You Purchase Land For Development

DUE DILIGENCE can make the difference between failure and reaching success when it comes to any purchase, but especially when buying property for development. I know you wouldn't do it, but I am often amazed that some people will purchase acreage with the intention of splitting and making some money without at least checking on whether the proposed split is feasible or even legal. Never rely on anyone's say so, even your real estate agent's, that you can easily split land and turn a profit. Even if the proposed split is legal, a developer must still determine whether a state public report will be required prior to lot sales and what getting one issued will involve. Always exercise due diligence before you make your offer; Failing that, certainly before you close your deal.

1. START by asking your agent if a state public disclosure report is available on the property in question. Among others, this is a good reason to use a licensed real estate agent. All licensed real estate professionals are required to receive training on real estate laws and are required to keep up on that training. In addition, an agent can be considered to have acted in concert when selling property if they knew or should have known that the sale they closed required a public disclosure report, so an agent has a high motivation to exercise their own due diligence. If you are not using an agent, most states have Department of Real Estate (DRE) websites with subdivision disclosure information available. For further information, contact your state DRE office.

2. ASK your agent for a property profile. A good property profile will include current ownership and their mailing address, site address, parcel number, census tract, housing tract, lot number, legal description, plat map, property characteristics, including acreage and latitude and longitude, the last transfer date with document recording number, assessment and tax information, transaction history, detailed sales comparables, nearby properties, demographics, public schools, private schools, plat map, flood zone and crime statistics. If you are not using an agent, there are many free services found on the World Wide Web such as Zillow where you can look up property information yourself.

3. Ask your agent to give you a copy of the deed and any previously recorded Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs). You don't have to wait for the contract to be written, the property is in escrow and a title search is done to check out these documents. If you are only buying a portion of an existing subdivision, the existing CC&Rs will be important for you to check out prior to purchasing. If you are developing your own subdivision, you will probably be declaring and recording your own CC&Rs.

4. AFTER you have received your property profile, go to the property and walk the entire site to determine its suitability for what you want to accomplish. While it is no substitute for being there, many counties now have public GIS mapping systems that will bring up the parcel in question in high resolution orthophotography and give you street names, whether roads are county maintained, show railroads and give recorded dimensions.

5. FIND OUT about the infrastructure--What is in place, are they adjacent or how many feet are they to your farthest proposed lot, can the facilities be extended and what the costs would be to extend to your proposed project. Take measurements from the farthest lot in question to each facility such as electric, telephone, cable, sewer and gas. Then contact the utility companies and find out what the process and fees are to extend service that distance. If you do not know the local utility companies for that area, pull out the local telephone book or contact the local Chamber of Commerce for a list.

6. NEXT, call the local City or County Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Department and check on zoning or rezoning potential. P&Z will have a Development Services Department as well, although it may be called another name. Ask to speak to the director about your proposal so they can tell you whether this fits in with the General Plan.

7. ASK for a copy of the General Plan and the Area Plan for your project locale. Besides a community history, a Master Plan tracks development trends and projects growth. It identifies county policies and priorities.

8. DETERMINE what is required by your local government entity for your land division. Many counties and cities have the regulations available on the internet. If they do not, call the P&Z that services the area in which you are interested and ask for a copy.

9. FIND more information on flood plains than is listed in your property profile by pulling up a FEMA map for your area at http://www.fema.gov. The FEMA website will even tell you whether flood insurance is required by lenders for the stated flood plain.

10. ALWAYS DETERMINE whether you will need a state public report or other disclosure reporting that may necessitate additional work and fees beyond your land division project. A general rule is that if your split results in more than 5 lots, you will need a special public report, but there are other variables such as common promotional plans and what you may already own within that common promotional plan area; Always determine the rules on this requirement prior to your purchase by calling your state DRE Development Department.

11. CONTACT an engineer to find out what the services may cost to accomplish your proposed land usage, along with the costs of delivering the items required for your public report, certifications from the Department of Environmental Quality, the Department of Water Resources and any local permitting.

12. FIND OUT what facilities you will be required to install based on the acreage of your proposed split. Many counties, especially rural areas, have lot split requirements for 1-acre parcels or less necessitating some or all of the following:

a. Private maintained roadway passable by a 2-wheel drive vehicle.
b. Public maintained roadway (Primary or Tertiary maintenance passable by 2-wd vehicle).
c. Access to electric service or agreement w/ utility company to extend service at your cost.
d. Within a fire district.
e. Direct access to water service pipelines operated by a water company.
f. Adjacent to a paved through road (collector, arterial) serving the area.
g. Direct access to paved road.
h. Direct access to public sewer.

13. FIND OUT ahead of time if your lender will offer partial release provisions for your deed of trust when you begin financing for your improvements. Once you begin your sales out of your new subdivision you must ensure that each new purchaser will receive his lot free and clear of any blanket encumbrance.

14. IDENTIFY the current builders involved in the surrounding areas and find out what the lots and dwellings are selling for and how fast they are moving. Check the re-sale value in the immediate area because this helps determine the sale prices of new construction in the neighborhood. After all, once you develop your property you want to sell it at a profit

These 14 steps should be the minimum of your due diligence investigation and merely represent the key issues that should be addressed prior to investing in development property. The principal reason for due diligence prior to buying and developing land is to determine if the land development would be economically sensible. You can go beyond the above-listed steps and search records for pending divorce, bankruptcy or other life changing events that could affect the amount you want to bid or offer on the property. A pending divorce could mean the principals might be willing to accept less.

Public disclosure reports are meant to protect the public. Among numerous disclosures in a state public report are facilities providers, potential hazards and problems in the area, schools, transportation, hospitals and stores. Property profiles used to only be available through real estate agents and title companies but much of this information is now freely available on the internet. Google "property profile" and you will get numerous hits on where to find this free information. If you cannot find a county website where you can find public recorded documents, call your county recorder and request copies. Once you have gathered all of your information and made the educated decision to purchase your property, make sure you call P&Z to make an appointment for you and your engineer to review your plans for developing. Each area has its own subdivision and development regulations and most are available online.

Sports Nudity Bloopers

Who doesn't love watching athletes making mistakes? The media holds them up as gods and goddesses immaculate in their ways and the more fervent fans literally worship the sneakers they walk in. Some fans take sports too seriously. Other fans watch sports to catch those moments where the athletes are seriously embarrassed.

You can keep your mundane bloopers where the ball bounces of the head of the outfielder or the receiver tumbles into the opposing side's coach. The bloopers that can be truly harrowing to the athlete are the ones where flesh is shone. The sports nudity bloopers are the most embarrassing form of messing up on the field and each rare moment in which it happens takes egos down several pegs.

The events most likely to produce some sports nudity bloopers are the most physical and intense until something pops out. Men's soccer has a high probability of revealing more than the black and white checkered balls. Although a game played primarily with the feet, soccer players and not afraid to swing an elbow or grab a handful of shirt in order to seize the ball. Players soon hit the turf and start reaching around for anything on the way down, usually the shorts of the opposing player who while winning the ball pays for it in pride.

Another event infamous for its sports nudity bloopers is the one that claims to be the most manly: rodeo. The self-proclaimed cowboys tie themselves to a horse or bull for some eight seconds, get thrown off, and then have the nerve to talk trash about every other sport out there. Rodeo is the deadliest sport around because the whole idea is to survive several seconds tied to a one ton animal trying everything it can to drive a hoof through your face or a horn through your stomach. When errant horns or a horse's teeth start ripping clothes, there is no doubt that you have to be nuts to get into rodeo, but you also risk showing the world that not everything is big in Texas.

Women try hardest to maintain grace in sports by wearing sports bras and shorts. The extra support makes the inevitable slip all the more degrading when it happens. Women sweat through their pants in tennis and reveal a lot in gymnastics, but what if you want to see what's hidden behind the over-engineered, space-age material? Any sport with grappling such as mixed martial arts, judo, and wrestling have a high chance of a shirt getting pulled to the side and something popping out. If you're aiming to catch a flash, then cheerleading is where to look.

Cheerleaders are notorious for tantalizing the audience. Some teams go so far as to demand members remove their pants before hitting the field and show a bit more than spirit. You might think that wouldn't count as one of sports nudity bloopers, but I assure you those girls are coerced by peer and coach alike. Shameful and therefore funny.
